1977 VW Variant
The Volkswagen Variant is a car that belongs to the family of models derived from the Volkswagen Type 3, designed to expand Volkswagen’s lineup beyond the Beetle, offering more space and versatility. In Brazil, the Variant enjoyed a successful trajectory, being produced from 1969 to 1981, and leaving a significant mark on the country’s automotive history.
Historical Context
The production of the VW Variant in Brazil began in 1969, based on the Volkswagen 1600, which was already being manufactured in the country. The car was introduced to meet the growing demand for roomier, more practical family vehicles, while still maintaining the robustness and simple mechanics that Brazilians associated with Volkswagen.
At the time, Volkswagen do Brasil was one of the most important subsidiaries of the German automaker outside Europe, and it had already developed a series of model adaptations for the local market. An example of this was the Brasília, another successful model based on the Beetle’s chassis.
The first version of the VW Variant, launched in 1969, was a station wagon with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, like the Beetle, but with a more modern design and greater cargo capacity. The engine was the well-known boxer 1600, with 1,584 cc and 54 hp, offering good durability and ease of maintenance.
Design and Style
The design of the Variant was influenced by global Volkswagen trends, but with some modifications for the Brazilian market. The simple and functional style was intended to maximize interior space and provide a good level of comfort for families. The car featured straight, angular body lines and a wide rear to accommodate the engine and luggage compartment.
The Variant was designed with a focus on practicality and family use, but its body was innovative for the time, with the luggage compartment located over the rear engine, increasing usable space. Additionally, the car had a second trunk in the front, making the most of the available space.
Mechanics and Performance
The Variant’s engine was the classic 1.6-liter boxer engine. Performance was reasonable for the time, especially considering the vehicle’s family-oriented purpose. The air-cooling system, typical of Volkswagens in this era, provided durability and lower maintenance needs, which was a major selling point.
End of Production
Despite attempts to revitalize the model, production of the Volkswagen Variant ended in 1981. By then, the Brazilian market was diversifying with more vehicle options, and the Variant began losing ground to more modern models, such as the Passat and Parati, which offered more advanced mechanics and contemporary designs.
Legacy
The VW Variant is remembered for its robustness and versatility. Its classic design and cargo capacity made it popular among Brazilian families. Furthermore, the model helped solidify Volkswagen’s reputation as a brand known for reliable and affordable cars in Brazil. Today, the Variant is highly valued by collectors and vintage car enthusiasts.
The VW Variant also symbolizes an era of local innovation within Volkswagen, with the development of models tailored to the specific conditions and needs of the Brazilian market.
